Understanding Anxiety

Worry... anxiety ... panic ...

Increasing stress of everyday life in the 21st century means that anxiety has become more prevalent in our society. Anxiety disorders affect at least 10 percent of the population in the UK at some time in their lives.

The anxiety response is hard wired in our neurology, it is an evolutionary adaptive neural alarm system for rapidly alerting us to sources of threat in our environment, it happens pre-thought.

Anxiety and fear are essential and without it the human species would have died out millions of years ago. Our ancestors were surrounded by physical threats and needed to be physically prepared to escape from real danger, they had to be able to run from the chasing lion or sabre- toothed  tiger, and they had to do this very quickly. We still have this anxiety response, but what we feel anxious about is more likely to be an upcoming presentation, exam, or work stress, not situations that would be advantageous to run from, but we still respond as if they were physical threats.

The anxiety response is known as the fight-or-flight response:

  • blood pressure rises- to increase circulation to muscles and heart
  • heart beats faster- to cope with the extra increased demands expected
  • breathing rate increases-to enable quicker uptake of oxygen in our blood
  • sweating- to try to cool ourselves
  • blood is diverted to the muscles in our limbs ready for action
  • digestion slowed down- causes saliva to dry up
