What is a Phobia

A phobia is an intense, irrational fear, to an object or situation. You recognise that the fear is excessive, and out of proportion to what you should be feeling, and you avoid whatever causes your phobic response, and this can severely restrict your life. It is possible to develop a phobia to almost any situation or object.

Types of Phobias:

  • Specific
  • Social
  • Agoraphobia

Specific Phobias

A fear of a particular object or situation, some common phobias are listed below:

  • fear of flying
  • fear of water
  • fear of spiders
  • fear of snakes
  • fear of heights
  • fear of lifts
  • fear of needles

Social Phobias

An extreme fear of being watched closely and judged by others. Social phobia is one of the most common anxiety disorders, it involves fear of humiliation or embarrassment in social or performance situations. Symptoms can be so severe that you may avoid certain situations, or endure the situation with anxiety. Some common social phobias are the following:

  • fear of public speaking
  • fear of eating in public
  • fear of exams
  • fear of using public toilets
  • fear of blushing
  • fear of writing in front of others

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia was originally defined as a fear of open spaces, it is now understood that it is a more complex fear, and has more than one aspect to it. If you have agoraphobia you tend to have a  number of fears of various situations, such as:

  • travelling on trains, buses, planes
  • being on a bridge
  • being in shops and public places, anywhere with crowds
  • anywhere far from home

The fear stems from being in a place where escape is difficult, or help will not be available. You become anxious and disturbed and have an intense desire to get out.
